Giovanni Battista Sammartini (ca. 1698 – 1775 in Milan) was an Italian composer, organist, choirmaster & teacher. He counted Gluck among his students, and was himself the prolific composer of operas, symphonies (over lxx), concertos and chamber music, which show, the symphonies especially, a beginnings of a vary from either a brief opera-overture style & the introduction of a fresh seriousness & utilise of thematic development that prefigure Haydn and Mozart. His earliest music was for liturgical use.
Sammartini's works come referred to, within publications or even recordings, either per opus number it received in his lifespan, or even per J-C statistics they receive in the Jenkins-Churgin catalog referred to beneath. Newell Jenkins edited some of Sammartini's works, including the Magnificat, first (he was likewise an editor of works by Vivaldi, Paisiello & Boccherini among others).
